Long Term Business Visa/Permit

The Long Term Business Visa category is for people who wish to establish a business in New Zealand. Visas will be issued for nine (9) months and an extension to three (3) years will be granted once the government is satisfied that the applicant is actually proceeding with establishing the business.

Successful applicants may later apply for residence under the Entrepreneur category.

This category requires you to have an idea for establishing a business in New Zealand and access to sufficient funds (personally or via pre-approved finance) to set it up. The application can be for:

¨       The establishment of a new business

¨       Purchase of an existing business

¨      Purchase of a New Zealand franchise opportunity

Under the Long Term Business Visa category there is no

¨       Point system

¨       Qualification requirements (except in some instances)

¨       Maximum age

¨       Minimum capital investment needed

You will also need a business plan that is realistic and demonstrates an understanding of the New Zealand business environment, plus you will need to have business experience relevant to the type of business that you want to establish in New Zealand.

To apply under this category you must not have been involved in a business failure or bankruptcy in the past five years, nor have ever been convicted of fraud or professional misconduct. You must also satisfy health requirements
and in addition to investment capital, sufficient funds for maintenance and accommodation. Proving an English background will also be required for LTBV applicants. If applicants do not have an English background, they have to sit a IELTS test (an average of 5.0 for the IELTS will be required).

If you have qualifications that are essential to the business you want to establish, they should be recognised in New Zealand, as some professions require compulsory registration with the appropriate professional body in New Zealand.

The business proposal plan covers the following:

  • An outline of the proposed business and of its viability
  • Financial and marketing information
  • The business experience of the applicant
  • Knowledge of the New Zealand market
